With a resounding victory over Getafe in La Liga on Sunday afternoon, Real Madrid bounced back from their midweek loss to Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League. Carlo Ancelotti’s team delivered a confidence-boosting victory to close the gap to leaders and rivals Barcelona, with goals from Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe, the England star from the penalty spot.
Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe’s goals helped Real Madrid defeat Getafe 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu, bringing them within one point of La Liga leaders Barcelona.
Within 30 minutes, Jude Bellingham gave the 36-time La Liga winners the lead when Getafe’s Allan Nyom pulled Antonio Rudiger down in the box, right in front of the referee.
Bellingham came up with a hop, skip, and jump to slot calmly down the middle and send the goalkeeper the wrong way, despite some argument with Kylian Mbappe on who should take the spot.
Eight minutes later, Bellingham threaded an inch-perfect ball for Mbappe, who scored his eighth La Liga goal of the season with a calm finish from the outside of the area that went in off the post. Mbappe didn’t have to wait long for his own goal.
Mbappe’s strike struck a Getafe player’s hand, depriving Carlo Ancelotti’s team of a second penalty. VAR intervened to reverse the decision, and the Frenchman missed a few chances to increase his total.
Real Madrid’s next La Liga games are against Athletic Club on Wednesday and Girona on Saturday. Before facing fellow struggling team Espanyol, Getafe will play fourth-tier team Orihuela in Copa de Rey competition midweek.
Talking Point: Mbappe hints but no clinical finish
Although his goal would have allayed skepticism, Mbappe was unable to double his goal total and could have easily scored more against Getafe when the opportunities presented themselves.
Carlo Ancelotti has stated that he is rotating the penalty-taking duties this season, so we probably can’t look too closely at Bellingham getting selected, but Mbappe still had plenty of opportunities.
Although there were moments during the game when Mbappe would have expected the ball to end up in the net, his goal was typical of Mbappe and something Real Madrid would have anticipated seeing much more of after his arrival.
Jude Bellingham of Real Madrid was the player of the match.
In the first half, he added a goal and an assist to his already impressive season-long record, but he was substituted out as a precaution at halftime.
Many supporters will want to see more of him as he calmly and collectedly tapped past David Soria of Getafe in goal and then threaded through Mbappe with an inch-perfect pass. Had he stayed on a bit longer.

Highlights of the Match
29′ MADRID PENALTY It was inevitable. This corner belongs to Real Madrid. Antonio Rudiger is once more being marked by Allan Nyom, who brings him down in the box. It caught the referee’s attention. It’s a punishment. Who is going to accept it?
30′ GOAL! Actual Madrid 30′ of Bellingham (1-0 GETAFE) Jude Bellingham casually slots it down the middle and sends the goalkeeper the wrong way with a hop, skip, and jump.
38′ GOAL! GETAFE 2-0 REAL MADRID (MBAPPE 38′) That was lovely. Mbappe has only one touch to move the ball away from the defender after Jude Bellingham throws him an inch-perfect pass, and he shoots just outside the box. It enters the goal after bouncing off the post.
50′ MADRID PENALTY The judgment appeared to take everyone by surprise because there were no appeals, but it appears that there was a handball in the box.
51′ NO PENALTY Following a VAR review, Getafe was exonerated.
The 75-foot MBAPPE finds it hard to believe he’s missed that one. As Mbappe rushes through on goal and sees his effort fly just wide of the post, it couldn’t have been much closer.
The woodwork is rattled by 83′ GETAFE. They must have believed they had a goal back when John Patrick beats Courtois with a shot that is just stopped by the woodwork.
Undoubtedly, 90+6′ MBAPPE ought to have received his second After setting up this goal, Mbappe drives into the area and locates Arda Guler, who places it on a plate for him because he can’t convert from close range.
